Defining an area with light

A pendant light naturally draws the eye toward the area it illuminates. It finds its place above a dining table, a kitchen island, a coffee table, or in an entryway where you want to add character without cluttering the floor. Well-chosen, it creates a focal point in the room and complements general lighting with a light more suited to everyday moments.

Start by identifying the area you want to highlight. Above a table, the pendant should help guests see each other and enjoy their meal without blocking their view or hindering movement. In an entryway, it can make the space more welcoming. In a living room, it often works best as a complement to a ceiling light or spotlights, table lamps, and, if needed, wall lights. This combination allows you to vary the mood according to the time of day and the activity.

Proportions are important. Measure the table or the area in question, consider the ceiling height, and allow for enough clearance around the fixture. A very wide pendant can overwhelm a small table; a model that is too small might disappear in a large room. Before installation, do a visual test with a light template or a ribbon to confirm the center of the area and the desired height.
